The project to renew Shueitai for the Heisei era (Type Design)

Six years have passed since this project started, and a family of 10 fonts is now being completed. We have developed a total of 120,000 characters. Shuei Shogo Mincho is renewed from a font type developed 100 years ago, while Shuei Mincho L is a renewal of a font type developed 60 years ago. Meanwhile, Shuei Mincho M, Shuei Mincho B, and Shuei Kaku Gothic Kin originate from a font type developed 20 years ago. Shuei Kaku Gothic Gin and Shuei Maru Gothic were developed as new font types. This is a font family with different ages/purposes and with only a little apparent commonality. However, we developed all the character sets to optimize them for the latest font environment, avoiding reminiscent stance and thinking of what kind of Shuei typeface contemporary users are seeking, as well as to achieve the quality to be passed on to the next generation. I hope that the Shuei font will still be used for books published even 100 years from now.

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. Shueitai Development Department

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. Shueitai Development Department was organized as a project team in 2003. Currently, six members are developing Shuei fonts, providing them for electronic books and other purposes, and are engaged in culture promotion activities. The office started the Shuei Font Renewal Project for the Heisei Era, or “Heisei no dai kaikoku,” in 2005. It renewed three Mincho fonts for text, a digitized Shogo Mincho, and developed new Kaku Gothic and Maru Gothic fonts.
